Text-only group cards feel incomplete. A well-chosen GIF can turn a polite "Happy Birthday" into something that actually makes your colleague laugh out loud. It's the difference between a card that gets glanced at and one that gets screenshot and shared in the group chat.
Culture Cards has a built-in GIPHY integration that lets you search millions of GIFs and attach one to your message — without leaving the card. No copying URLs, no downloading files, no pasting links that may or may not preview correctly. You search, you click, it's attached.
Here's exactly how it works.
Before you start
Two things to know:
- GIF uploads are a premium feature. The card organiser needs to unlock premium ($5.99 one-time) for that card. Once unlocked, every signer can add GIFs and images to their messages — there's no per-person charge.
- No app required. The GIF search works in any browser on desktop or mobile. Signers don't need an account — just the card link.
If you're signing a card and you see the media buttons (Photo and GIF) below the message area, the organiser has already unlocked premium. You're good to go.
Step-by-step: Adding a GIF to your message
Open the card and start signing
Click the card link you received (or open a card from your dashboard). You'll see the signing form with fields for your name, email (optional), and your message.
Click the GIF button
Below the message text area, you'll see two media buttons: Photo and GIF. Click GIF. This opens the GIPHY search panel, which automatically loads trending GIFs so you can browse right away.
Search for the perfect GIF
Type a keyword into the search bar — like "celebration", "thank you", "farewell wave", or "birthday party". Results appear instantly in a grid below. All results are filtered to G-rated content, so everything is workplace-safe.
You'll also see the small "Powered by GIPHY" logo in the search bar — that's where the GIFs come from.
Select your GIF
Click any GIF thumbnail to select it. The search results will hide and a preview of your selected GIF appears with an × button to remove it if you change your mind. Click the × to go back and search again.
Write your message and submit
Add your text message in the textarea above, enter your name, and click "Add Your Message →". Your GIF is now permanently attached to your message on the card. The recipient will see it animating alongside your text when they view the card.
That's it. Five steps, under 30 seconds.
Can I upload my own GIF instead?
Yes. Click the Photo button instead of GIF, then drag and drop (or browse for) your own GIF file. Culture Cards accepts JPG, PNG, GIF, and WEBP files up to 5MB. This is great for inside jokes, team memes, or custom animations that GIPHY won't have.
Best GIF search terms for every occasion
Not sure what to search for? Here are the terms that return the best results for common workplace card occasions:
birthday party birthday cake happy birthday celebratefarewell wave goodbye bon voyage miss you salutecongratulations level up cheers applause bossthank you grateful you rock high five thumbs upwelcome hello waving excited new hereget well sending love feel better hug careTips for choosing the right GIF
- Keep it short and clear. GIFs that loop in 2-3 seconds with a single emotion land better than long, complex ones. A simple clapping GIF says more than a 10-second movie clip.
- Match the tone of your message. A heartfelt farewell message pairs well with a warm wave or a subtle nod — not a chaotic explosion of confetti. Save the wild celebration GIFs for birthdays and promotions.
- Avoid GIFs with embedded text. Text in GIFs can be hard to read at small sizes and may not age well. Let your written message do the talking and use the GIF for the emotional reaction.
- When in doubt, go wholesome. The Office, Parks and Rec, and classic reaction GIFs are almost always safe choices. Avoid anything that requires context to understand.
- One GIF per message is the limit. This is by design — it keeps cards clean and readable. Make your one pick count.
What if GIFs are locked?
If you see a message saying "Image & GIF uploads require Premium" instead of the media buttons, the card organiser hasn't unlocked premium yet. Here's what to do:
- If you're the card organiser: Click the "Unlock Premium" button on the card page. It's a one-time $5.99 payment per card. Once unlocked, all signers can add media.
- If you're a signer: You can't unlock premium yourself. Let the organiser know — send them a quick message asking them to upgrade the card so everyone can add GIFs.
Premium also unlocks custom themes, email delivery, scheduled sending, image downloads, and branding removal. So the organiser gets more than just GIF support for the $5.99.
GIFs on mobile vs desktop
The GIF search works identically on both. On mobile, the search results grid adjusts to fit your screen, and you can scroll through results by swiping. The same GIPHY library, the same G-rated filter, the same one-tap selection.
The only difference: on very slow mobile connections, GIF thumbnails may take a moment to load since they're animated previews. The search itself is fast because it hits GIPHY's API directly.

Short, looping GIFs with clear emotions work best. Search for terms like "celebration", "thank you", "clapping", "farewell wave", or "birthday party". Avoid GIFs with text that might not age well or could be taken out of context.
